In February we had the amazing opportunity to be invited to speak at the Coram Baaf conference “Aggression and Violence in Foster Care and Adoption”. It was a great event with some interesting speakers alongside our Managing Director Andy Baker.
It is such a complex subject and one-day event can only touch the surface on the issues presented but there were some interesting perspectives and debate in relation to the risks of violence with fostering and adoption, with the antecedent of the event being the tragic death of a foster carer Dawn McKenzie, who was stabbed to death by her foster child in 2011. Although this is a unique case, we have worked with many foster carers who have experienced violence and aggression either towards themselves or others in their home in the time they have fostered. So many lessons to learn and reflect on.
