
First Aid for Foster Carers
Course Description
This course can be run as either a one day or a two day course.
It is designed to meet standard 6.7 of the National Minimum Standards for Fostering Services, which requires all foster carers to receive ‘basic training on … first aid with particular emphasis on health promotion and communicable diseases’.
The course provides theoretical and practical training in first aid techniques that are suitable for infants, children and teens.
Day 1 (4 hours)
- Contents of the First Aid Kit
- Primary Assessment
- Recovery Position
- CPR, Choking, Asthma and Hyperventilation
- Shock and Bleeding
- Bone, Joint and Muscle Injuries
- Burns
- Childhood Ailments
Day 2 (4 hours)
- Conditions effecting the eyes, ears or nose
- Diabetes
- Anaphylaxis
- Effects of extreme heat and/or cold
- Poisoning
- Bites or stings
- Electric shock
- Practice of practical skills
