PMVA (Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression)
Following the principles of the current NICE guidelines 2015 our training is based on a person centred approach to conflict and difficult behaviour using the Able 6-Stage Target Model of proactive and responsive service delivery and emphasising the use of physical intervention and restraint as a last resort. The training meets NHS protect standards in conflict resolution and physical intervention.
This is a three to five day advanced course that is aimed at high risk environments which require staff to step past the lower risk techniques due to the level of aggression or situation.
This course explore the six stages of managing aggression and challenging behaviour, from understanding the causes of and reducing challenging behaviour, de-escalating aggressive behaviour, physical and non-physical defensive strategies, guiding techniques and control & restraint /safer-holding techniques.
PMVA three day course
Over the first two days the course explores the causes of challenging behaviour within the required setting and pro-active strategies for reducing behaviours, de-escalation strategies for managing a situation once it has escalated, dynamic risk assessment principles to help staff recognise the appropriate course of action and then the law regarding physical intervention.
It then teaches staff physical techniques including disengagement, defence techniques, basic guiding and holding/restraint techniques for varying risk levels and situations.
On day three, advanced techniques that are taught include relocating from the floor, floor holds and higher risk standing restraints.
PMVA four to five day courses – recommended for high risk environments
The course content is as above but we include a full day of conflict management, managing challenging behaviour and de-escalation training before we progress to the physical skills. The physical skills training goes to a higher level of intensity exploring scenarios and situations and giving staff additional time to practice and improve their skills.
The physical intervention techniques taught on the course have been independently medically risk assessed by the Institute of Conflict Management and incorporates techniques that are taught within the guide lines of:
- NHS Protect
- BILD (British Institute of Learning Disabilities)
- Department of Education
- Department of Health
- Standards of other commercially driven training systems that teach control & restraint and physical intervention techniques
- Skills for Health
- Skills for Care
Practical skills will be taught within the context of the dynamic risk assessment and the focus of the techniques taught will vary on the organisational needs (e.g. primary school setting will be different to adult mental health).
