Formerly known under names like “shell shock” or “battle shock”, post traumatic stress disorder was officially added into the DSV-III in 1980 after the gulf war. It has had its profile raised over the past decades as a very real condition that affect individuals who have experienced or suffered traumatic events in their life. It is commonly associated with veterans returning from war zones, however the scope of who can be affected by PTSD is much broader than first understood.

This course explores the causes, symptoms, treatments and impact that PTSD can have on a person and raises awareness for those working with them. PTSD can affect children who have come from war torn environments, experienced abuse, been involved in severe accidents or even just been the witness of these.

Attendees will be able to:

Identify possible causes of PTSD
Recognise potential symptoms
Understand how PTSD affects children and adults differently
Identify common treatments and their benefits
Better support a person with PTSD and recognise its impact on them in the real world
Understand its impact on relationships and help others to understand the condition
Offer trauma informed care
