Frequently Asked Questions

What are slips and trips?
Slips and trips are both types of unintentional falls that can happen anywhere. Slips occur when you lose your footing due to a sudden change in the walking surface beneath you. For example, you might slip on a wet floor, a patch of ice, or some spilt liquid. Trips happen when you stumble because you make contact with an obstacle in your path that you didn’t expect to be there. Examples include tripping over a loose floorboard, a curb, or an uneven step.
Keep floors clean and dry, use slip-resistant surfaces when needed, fix uneven surfaces, ensure good lighting, and avoid clutter. Secure electrical cords. Wear shoes with good grip, be aware of your surroundings, avoid rushing, use handrails, clean up spills right away, and ask for help with heavy objects.
There isn’t a single, specific regulation solely focused on slips, trips, and falls, however, the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) 1974 is key. HSWA requires employers to generally ensure worker safety, and this includes preventing slips, trips and falls. Specific regulations under HSWA, like those on workplace conditions and risk management, outline how employers must achieve this. These regulations essentially translate the general duty of care into concrete actions to prevent workplace tumbles.
