The Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (as part of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974) states that all employers are required by law to protect their employees, service users and others, from harm.

Most businesses and places of work will carry some risk of harm. Risk is defined as the likelihood of a hazardous event occurring and the consequence of the event should it occur. A risk assessment is a careful examination of anything in your workplace that could cause people to suffer an injury or ill health while at work. Assessing risk is one part of the overall process used to control risks in the workplace.

What you'll learn.

This course explores the steps and processes involved in effective risk assessment, and helps learners recognise and understand the risks involved in their place of work, setting, and environment and how they can manage that risk. Delegates will learn how to identify the hazards present in their workplace and surroundings which could lead to injury or illness, decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed and how seriously, take action to eliminate the hazard, or if that isn’t possible, control the risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a risk assessment?
A risk assessment is a careful look at what could harm people in a workplace. It helps you decide what you need to do to keep people safe. You look at what could cause harm, how likely it is to happen, and how serious it could be. Then you decide on the best way to prevent harm or reduce the risk.
There are several different types of risk assessments, each suited to different situations: 1. Qualitative Risk Assessment: This is the most common type, using judgement to assess risks as high, medium, or low based on likelihood and severity. 2. Quantitative Risk Assessment: This uses numerical values to measure risk, often using a risk matrix. It’s more complex but provides a more precise assessment. 3. Generic Risk Assessment: A general template that can be adapted to different situations, providing a starting point. 4. Site-Specific Risk Assessment: Focuses on a particular location or activity, identifying specific hazards and risks. 5. Dynamic Risk Assessment: Continuously evaluates risks as conditions change, often used in high-risk environments.
The purpose of a risk assessment is to identify potential hazards, evaluate the associated risks, and put control measures in place to minimise harm. Essentially, it’s a proactive approach to health and safety. By carrying out a risk assessment, organisations can: 1. Protect employees, customers, and visitors from harm. 2. Comply with legal duties. 3. Improve efficiency and productivity. 4. Reduce costs associated with accidents and injuries. 5. Enhance the organisation’s reputation.
