Our training in the subject of managing difficult behaviours and aggression all follow the Able Target System. The Able Target system is Able Training’s system for managing behaviour of concern, behaviour that challenges, distress, crisis, aggression and violence. It is adaptable to various environments in the health and social care and education settings. It comprises of 5 modules that map across from the three tier strategy process which includes primary strategies, secondary and proactive responsive strategies and tertiary intervention. This module includes personal safety strategies, non-restrictive physical skills including responsive interventions to manage big emotions and breakaway training.

What you'll learn.

In certain environments and situations, staff should be able to recognise and manage the risks of imminent violence or aggression. This may be necessary when every possibility of managing a situation through either pro-active or non-physical responses have not worked and responsive interventions to manage big emotions, de-escalation and personal safety strategies are required. This module expands on the principles of ongoing assessment and dynamic risk assessment from module 1 and brings them over to a higher risk setting where there may be a risk of physical aggression. The Personal Safety & Breakaway Module of the Able Target System gives staff an understanding of any use of force within their setting. Secondary proactive and responsive strategies and Tertiary Interventions, to manage big emotions including personal safety and breakaway training.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are self-protective and breakaway procedures?
Both self-protective and breakaway procedures aim to keep individuals safe. Self-protective procedures focus on creating a safer environment in general, while breakaway procedures provide techniques for escaping a physical confrontation.
Breakaway techniques that are given involve focus on safely disengaging from physical confrontations. Key techniques include body positioning to maintain balance, evasion to move away from strikes, redirecting an attacker’s force to create space, and breaking free from grabs using leverage and momentum. De-escalation through calming communication is also emphasised to prevent confrontations.
Breakaway techniques, when properly practised under certified instruction, are generally safe. They emphasise proper body positioning, controlled movements, and safe training environments to minimise injury risk. However, improper technique or overconfidence can lead to harm. These techniques aim to minimise risk during confrontations but not eliminate it, with de-escalation being the preferred first step. Knowing when to disengage and seek help is crucial.
