Frequently Asked Questions

What is the meaning of equality, diversity and inclusion?
Equality ensures everyone has equal rights, opportunities and access to resources by eliminating discrimination. Diversity recognises and values the differences among people, including race, gender, age and more. Inclusion involves creating an environment where all individuals feel welcomed, respected and to actively promote collaboration, participation and belonging for everyone.
The difference between an equality policy and a diversity policy lies in their focus and scope. Equality Policy focuses on ensuring equal rights, opportunities and fair treatment for all, eliminating discrimination. It emphasises legal compliance and equal treatment, aiming to create a level playing field. Diversity policy however, focuses on recognising and valuing individual differences and promoting inclusive environments. It goes beyond legal compliance, viewing diversity as a strategic advantage for innovation and success.
To demonstrate equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace developing and communicating inclusive policies is the place to start. Leaders should champion and model inclusive behaviours. Workplaces should implement fair recruitment and promotion processes and seek out diverse candidates. Diversity, unconscious bias, and cultural competency training should be conducted. Foster a supportive culture, encouraging open dialogue between colleagues. Flexible work arrangements should be offered to accommodate diverse needs. Ensure accessibility and provide reasonable accommodations to those that require them. Celebrate diverse achievements and organise cultural events where appropriate.
