MVA Management of Violence and Aggression Overview:
Following the principles of the current NICE guidelines 2015 our training is based on a person centred approach to conflict and difficult behaviour using the Able 6-Stage Target Model of proactive and responsive service delivery and emphasising the use of physical intervention and restraint as a last resort. This is a two or three day course that explores the six stages of managing aggression and challenging behaviour from understanding the causes of and reducing challenging behaviour, de-escalating aggressive behaviour, physical and non-physical defensive strategies, guiding techniques and control & restraint/safer-holding techniques.

What does the course cover:
MVA two day course
This course explores the causes of challenging behaviour within the required setting and pro-active strategies for reducing behaviours, de-escalation strategies for managing a situation once it has escalated, dynamic risk assessment principles to help staff recognise the appropriate course of action and then the law regarding physical intervention.
It then teaches staff physical techniques including disengagement, defence techniques, basic guiding and holding/restraint techniques for varying risk levels and situations.
MVA three day course
The content covered follows the same outline as the two day course but each day is focused on the separate course modules. Day 1 is managing challenging behaviour and de-escalation, day two explores the law relating to physical intervention and teaches staff disengagement and restraint techniques, and day three explores scenarios and situations and gives staff more time to practice and absorb the techniques taught.
The physical intervention techniques taught on the course have been independently medically risk assessed by the Institute of Conflict Management and incorporates techniques that are taught within the guidelines of:
- NHS Protect
- BILD (British Institute of Learning Disabilities)
- Department of Education
- Department of Health
- Standards of other commercially driven training systems that teach control & restraint and physical intervention techniques
- Skills for Health
- Skills for Care
Who is the course for?
This is a two to three day course that is aimed at medium risk environments which require staff to step past the lower risk techniques due to the level of aggression or situation.
What will you achieve?
- List the possible causes of challenging behaviour.
- Demonstrate de-escalation principles in the event of aggression.
- Define the term ‘reasonable force’ and apply its principles
- Understand the law relating to Self Defence and Physical Intervention.
- Perform a dynamic risk assessment.
- Identify the importance of recording and debriefing.
- Demonstrate effective defensive physical techniques including- wrist, hair, throat and clothing grabs, punches, kicks, third part.y assistance and escorting/guiding techniques.
- Demonstrate effective 1 – 3 person restraint techniques in standing, walking and sitting positions (can include bed)
- Practice and reflect the importance of ‘Letting Go’ safely.
- Practice effective escalation and de-escalation of techniques.
About this course
Our MVA Management of Violence and Aggression course is based around the Able’s Six Stage Target System which is an analytical process model based on the principles of Positive Behaviour Support and Trauma-informed Care. Every course will be focused on restraint reduction and apply a human rights approach.
The Able Target system aims to improve quality of life, care and support for individuals on a day to day basis but also improve an organisations culture of care, support and outcomes. It will improve staff competence, confidence and skills to enable them to keep the individuals they support, themselves and others safe. The six stage target model has been praised by numerous organisations as a positive, person centred system that staff can apply within everyday interactions to reduce behaviours of concern. It is also being utilised within organisations as an overall model for behavioural planning and analysis to create a positive environment and culture within the setting.
Each module of the Able Target System is made up of numerous setting specific components. The module level required, and components included will be based on your individual setting, risk assessment and training needs analysis. The modules must be completed in order.
Primary strategies including preventative, proactive and responsive strategies to manage behaviour of concern and aggression (Positive behavioural support and de-escalation). ‘Behaviour that challenges’ comes in many forms and varies dependent on situation and environment and the personal feelings of the individuals involved. This course will enable participants to explore the issues that lead to challenging behaviour and is tailored to your environment and needs. Learners will learn how to respond rather than react to behaviour that challenges and aggression through techniques including:
Reinforcing and rewarding behaviour that is incompatible with challenging behaviour.
Person-centred problem solving to create win‐win outcomes
What to do when faced with danger.
In certain environments and situations, staff should be able to recognise and manage the risks of imminent violence or aggression. This may be necessary when every possibility of managing a situation through either pro-active or non-physical responses have not worked and responsive interventions to manage big emotions, de-escalation and personal safety strategies are required. This module expands on the principles of ongoing assessment and dynamic risk assessment from module 1 and brings them over to a higher risk setting where there may be a risk of physical aggression. The Personal Safety & Breakaway Module of the Able Target System gives staff an understanding of any use of force within their setting. Secondary proactive and responsive strategies and Tertiary Interventions, to manage big emotions including personal safety and breakaway training.
Within some environments, the impact factors related to the individuals at risk may require staff to have a greater skill level in restraint, available to manage violent and dangerous behaviours. This may be necessary when every possibility of managing a situation through either pro-active or non-physical responses have not worked and responsive or reactive strategies including restrictive physical intervention are required. This module expands on the principles of ongoing assessment and dynamic risk assessment from module 1 and brings them over to a higher risk setting where there may be a significant risk of physical aggression and where withdrawal will not eliminate the risk. The Positive Handling & Restraint Module of the Able Target System gives staff an understanding of when restraint or safe holding may be appropriate. Tertiary Intervention includes responsive and reactive strategies. Restrictive and non-restrictive physical intervention skills (Positive Handling, Guiding/Shepherding, Restraint, Clinical Holding). The positive handling module of the Target System allows staff to practice and train in the basic safe holding techniques. It ensures staff can recognise the risks related to the techniques and reminds about the principles of dynamic risk assessment and monitoring during any physical intervention.
Within some environments, the impact factors related to the individuals at risk may require staff to have a greater skill level in restraint, available to manage violent and dangerous behaviours. This may be necessary when every possibility of managing a situation through either pro-active or non-physical responses have not worked and responsive or reactive strategies including restrictive physical intervention are required. This module expands on the principles of ongoing assessment and dynamic risk assessment from module 1 and brings them over to a higher risk setting where there may be a significant risk of physical aggression and where withdrawal will not eliminate the risk. The Advanced Safe Holding module of the Able Target System gives staff an understanding of when restraint or safe holding may be appropriate. Tertiary Intervention includes responsive and reactive strategies. Advanced safe holding training to manage high risk situations. The safe holding module of the Target System allows staff to practice and train in the advanced safe holding techniques including floor holds, safety pod holds, seclusion and rapid tranquilisation. It ensures staff can recognise the risks related to the techniques and reminds about the principles of dynamic risk assessment and monitoring during any physical intervention.
Who is this course accredited by?
Able deliver training that is in line with the Restraint Reduction Network Training Standards 2019 and we are currently within the application process for BILD ACT accreditation to be certified by UKAS as complying with the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) standards.
All of our physical intervention skills have been independently medically risk assessed by a physiotherapist, an experienced clinical lead and a person with lived experience and are approved and recognised by the Institute Of Conflict Management (ICM). Physical skills will only be taught based on your organisations training needs analysis and risk assessment which we can support you through to get the right course for you.
If you require your staff to be trained in restrictive physical skills (restraint) then to meet standards strongly encouraged by the CQC and outlined by the Restraint Reduction Network Training standards 2019 if an organisation requires restrictive physical skills to be taught. There are minimum requirements to be completed before restrictive physical skills can be taught.
Although OFSTED are not actively requiring training to meet these standards we would still encourage settings to work towards them as a demonstration of good practice.
Able Training are an approved centre with the Institute of conflict management, and members of the restraint reduction network. Our courses are in line with NICE Guidelines 2015 Violence and aggression: short-term management in mental health, health and community settings.
