Frequently Asked Questions

What is meant by working at height?
Working at height refers to any activity where a person is at risk of falling and injuring themselves. This could be from a variety of heights, not necessarily just from very high up. Any situation where a fall could cause injury is considered working at height.
Falls: This is the most obvious risk and can have devastating consequences. The severity of a fall injury depends on the height from which you fall and the surface you land on. Even a short fall can cause serious injuries like broken bones, head trauma, or spinal cord damage. Dropping Objects: Another major risk is dropping tools, materials, or equipment from a height. This can injure people working below, and falling objects can be particularly dangerous because the person below might not have enough warning to react.
When working at height, essential PPE includes a fall arrest system with a full-body harness, lanyard, shock absorber, and secure anchor point. A hard hat protects against falling objects, while hi-vis gear ensures visibility. Slip-resistant boots with good ankle support are crucial for stability. Depending on the job, additional items like gloves, eye protection, and ear protection may also be required.
