Frequently Asked Questions

What is positive behaviour and de-escalation training?
Positive Behavioural Support (PBS): A proactive approach to encourage desirable behaviour through positive reinforcement, clear expectations, and creating supportive environments. It focuses on teaching and rewarding good behaviour while preventing issues before they arise. De-escalation Techniques: Strategies to manage and calm potentially volatile situations. This includes using calm and non-threatening communication, active listening, showing empathy, and creating a safe environment to reduce tension and prevent escalation. Together, these methods aim to promote positive interactions and effectively handle conflicts.
The three stages of de-escalation are: Prevention: Prepare and address early signs of agitation to prevent conflicts. De-escalation: Use calm communication, active listening, and offer choices to manage the situation. Post-Escalation: Follow up, reflect on the incident, and provide support to prevent future issues.
Prevention – Proactive Strategies: Implement strategies to prevent problem behaviours by creating a supportive environment and teaching appropriate behaviours. Intervention – Teaching and Reinforcement: Provide direct teaching of desired behaviours and use positive reinforcement to encourage and maintain these behaviours. Support – Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustment: Continuously monitor behaviour, collect data, and adjust strategies as needed to ensure the effectiveness of interventions and support long-term positive outcomes.
