Understanding Mental Health & Mental Illness

“Mental health” and “mental illness” are increasingly used as if they mean the same thing, but they do not. Everyone has mental health, just like everyone has health. A mental illness is a condition that affects the way people think, feel, behave, or interact with others. This full day or half day course outlines the differences and allows delegates to better understand various conditions of mental illness, with the aim to increase understanding, decrease stigma and promote support for those affected by mental health conditions.

What does this course cover?

This course covers a variety of mental health conditions and illnesses, including PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Substance Abuse, and Eating Disorders.  The aim of the course is to equip delegates with an awareness and knowledge of mental health conditions, and how they might best support and care for those suffering from mental illness.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for anyone who works with, or supports groups or individuals with, a mental health condition or mental illness.  It is also beneficial for anyone looking to obtain additional knowledge and training in the recognition and treatment of a variety of mental health conditions.  For in-depth, condition specific training learners may want to consider our awareness courses.  For further information on the immediate care and support of an individual with mental illness, please see our course page on Mental Health First Aid.

What will you achieve?

By the end of the course, you‘ll be able to…

  • State the difference between mental health and mental illness
  • Identify causes of mental illness
  • Identify myths and truths around the subject of mental health
  • Improve language to reduce stigma
  • Describe various forms of mental illness including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, personality disorders and schizophrenia
  • Understand terms like psychosis and neurosis
  • Identify links to self harming behaviour
  • Assess potential suicide risks
  • Promote positive mental health in themselves and others
