This is a two or three day Safeholding in Elderly Care course that explores the six stages of managing aggression and challenging behaviour. This includes understanding the causes of and reducing challenging behaviours with a focus on triggers and stressors related to elderly care settings (inc. Dementia) , de-escalating aggressive behaviour, physical and non-physical defensive strategies, guiding techniques and control & safer-holding techniques. Due to the vulnerability of elderly clients, we focus on low contact techniques that can help protect the care worker but also the client from harm.

What you'll learn.

Two day course

This course explores the causes of challenging behaviour within the required setting and pro-active strategies for reducing behaviours, de-escalation strategies for managing a situation once it has escalated, dynamic risk assessment principles to help staff recognise the appropriate course of action and then the law regarding physical intervention.

It then teaches staff physical techniques including disengagement, defence techniques, basic guiding and safeholding techniques for varying risk levels and situations.

Three day course

The content covered follows the same outline as the 2 day course but each day is focused on the separate course modules. Day 1 is managing challenging behaviour and de-escalation, day two explores the law relating to physical intervention and teaches staff disengagement and safe-holding techniques and day three explores scenarios and situations and gives staff more time to practice and absorb the techniques taught.

These techniques are currently being taught to various personnel working within the NHS, residential & nursing homes, schools, foster care and other organisations

Practical skills will be taught within the context of the dynamic risk assessment and the focus of the techniques taught will vary on the organisational needs (e.g primary school setting will be different to adult mental health).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the meaning of safe holding in elderly care?
Safe holding refers to the practice of gently and safely restraining an elderly person to prevent harm to themselves or others. This is often necessary in situations where an individual may be confused, agitated, or displaying behaviours that challenge, such as those associated with dementia. The goal of safe holding is to ensure the safety and well-being of the individual while minimising distress and maintaining their dignity. It is typically used as a last resort when other interventions, like verbal de-escalation or environmental adjustments, have not been effective.
Safe holding can be safe when carried out properly by trained professionals. It is designed to prevent harm to both the individual and others in situations where the person may be exhibiting behaviours that challenge, such as aggression or severe agitation. However, it does carry risks if not done correctly, such as physical injury or emotional distress. Therefore, it is crucial that safe holding is only used when absolutely necessary and as a last resort, following all appropriate guidelines and training. It’s important to regularly review the practice to ensure it remains necessary and to explore less restrictive alternatives whenever possible.
Safe holding in elderly care has several benefits, including: 1. Preventing harm to the individual and others. 2. Maintaining safety during potentially dangerous situations. 3. Calming the person and reducing distress. 4. Protecting during medical procedures, preventing unintentional injuries. 5. Providing a sense of security and reassurance. However, it should only be used as a last resort and in a respectful, compassionate manner.
